Dear Editor-

In his recent speech at Northwestern University, Attorney General Eric Holder noted that in using lethal force the U.S. must make sure it is acting within the laws of war, and that law-of-war principles "do not forbid the use of stealth or technologically advanced weapons" apparently referring to drones (Politics &The Nation Holder says U.S. has right to kill terrorist citizens abroad March 6). The crime-against-humanity is that any nation is conceded legal recourse for war as a problem-solving tool. The first law-of-war principle should be collaborative global sanction against any nation exercising war as a solution. When the United States through Attorney General Eric Holder holds that high ground, then our U.S. legal arguments will stand incontrovertible in the courts of international law. But unfortunately, American exceptionalism notwithstanding,  the superpower in this world daring to take that high road has yet to materialize.
